Dale's Bowhead Community Outfitter Program
The Steadfast Foundation is helping raise funds to purchase a Bowhead Adaptive Adventure E-Bike to benefit physically disabled people living in The New York City area. This community effort will be championed by Dale Short who lives in South Orange, NJ. Dale approached us with this amazing idea to provide his surrounding community access to adaptive mountain biking by starting a “Community Outfitter” where people can come learn to use the bike and borrow it to take on a life-changing adventure.
We believe in Dale’s efforts and are thrilled to help his vision come true by providing the platform for his fundraising efforts. Learn more about Dale’s story and vision below:
“I was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Type R2 10 years ago. While I can walk short distances indoors, my body no longer allows me to bike and hike, which are activities I really miss. I discovered Bowhead Adaptive Adventure researching what could help me enjoy these activities again. However, the price tag is expensive and hard to justify when being disabled means making so many other financial investments in your everyday life to maintain your independence. I realized though- able-bodied people rent recreational equipment all the time, why can’t disabled people in my community have the same?
My vision is that a bike could be reserved by users for a few days at a time to be able to go on outings. I would lead maintaining, storing, finding accessible places to utilize the bike in the NY/NJ/PA area, as well as helping people learn to use the bike. I also want to bring the bike to special events like fundraising walks to promote accessible adventure activities and challenge public ideas of what the disabled are capable of doing. My hope is we reach out and promote the bike to a wide variety of disabled communities including those affected by war, spinal injury survivors, neuromuscular diseases, and developmental disorders.”
